What is Dragon Boat Festival?
The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the traditional festivals of the Chinese people. It is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month every year. This festival has a long history. It began in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period and has a history of more than 2,000 years.
There are many theories about the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival. The most widely-used one is the story of commemorating the poet Qu Yuan of the State of Chu. According to the "Historical Records", Qu Yuan committed suicide by jumping into the Miluo River during the Warring States Period because of his patriotic feelings. In order to commemorate him, later generations used the Dragon Boat Festival as his memorial day. In addition, some other historical figures such as Wu Zixu and Cao E are also related to the Dragon Boat Festival.
The customs of the Dragon Boat Festival are rich and colorful, mainly including dragon boat racing, eating zongzi, hanging mugwort and calamus, wearing sachets, and soaking in dragon boat water. Among them, dragon boat racing and eating zongzi are the most core activities.
