What is a Cast Lifting Loop?

Cast lifting loops are one of the precast concrete manufacturers' most economical lifting systems. They are made from galvanized mild steel wire rope. They have a swaged connection ferrule and a colored label that identifies the safe working load and the manufacturer's logo. It can be used for surface or edge lifting applications and is "embedded" into the concrete surface. The galvanized wire rope is in a figure 8 shape and is secured at both ends by positive swaged clamps with a steel band approximately at the midpoint to create the correct shape. The lifting loop system has 2/3 of its length embedded in the concrete. The hardware must be a standard hook or clevis with a diameter at least twice the diameter of the rope. Each anchor has a colored label that identifies the anchor's tensioning SWL (safe working load).

Application of Lifting Loop Precast Concrete

Precast lifting loops are the most economical way of providing crane hook attachments in prefabricated units. However, they require a relatively large edge distance. Once finally in place, the protruding eyelet can be cut off if necessary, but consideration must still be given to providing corrosion protection for the cut end to avoid rusting. The flexibility of wire rope makes it the safest method of forming prefabricated eyelets. Eyelets formed from steel bars are susceptible to fatigue, especially when bent during tilt lifting.
